Yes, you can eat soup on a keto diet, as long as the soup is made with low carb ingredients such as bone broth, keto vegetables, a source of protein, and healthy fats.

Some ingredients to limit include starchy vegetables like potatoes or carrots, grains like rice or barley, and high-carb thickeners like flour or cornstarch.

I recommend making keto soups at home because store-bought soups may contain hidden additives and sugar.

In conclusion, soup can be a delicious and satisfying addition to a ketogenic diet, as long as it’s made with keto-friendly ingredients and fits within your daily carb limits.

Common Ingredients in Keto Soups

Keto soups are usually made with low carb ingredients such as vegetables, healthy fats, and protein.

  • Vegetables – Keto-friendly vegetables are a must in any soup you decide to make. Onion, celery, and carrots are generally the first ingredients I add to a soup. Even though onions and carrots are higher in carbs, I use only a small amount to keep carbs to a minimum. I also add broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, kale, zucchini, and asparagus.
  • Herbs and Spices  in most of my soup recipes, I use dried herbs and spices, but when it’s summer and my garden is full of fresh herbs, and can’t resist getting some and add in my soup at the end.
  • Meat – Personally, I am a big fan of vegetable soups, but I also love creamy meaty soups.
  • Bone broth: Bone broth is a nutrient-dense broth made by simmering bones and connective tissue from animals. It is rich in collagen, amino acids, and minerals, making it a popular ingredient in keto soups.
  • Coconut milk or Heavy Cream: Both add creaminess and flavor to the soup.
  • Spices and herbs: Spices and herbs are often used in keto soups to add flavor and depth. Popular choices include garlic, ginger, cumin, turmeric, thyme, and rosemary.
  • Low-carb thickeners: To thicken soups, keto-friendly thickeners such as xanthan gum, guar gum, and psyllium husk can be used instead of flour or cornstarch, which are high in carbs.

Types of Keto Soup Recipes

  1. Creamy soups: These soups made with low-carb vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, or zucchini. Heavy cream, coconut milk, or cream cheese are used to add richness and flavor.

  • Starches – Thickeners like flour and cornstarch are too high in carbs, so if you want to make a comforting mouth feel for your keto soup ideas, try using some cauliflower rice (or florets), zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash, or rutabagas. They replace the rice, pasta, or potatoes. If needed, you can also use keto-friendly thickeners such as almond flour, coconut flour, or xanthan gum.
  • Use low-carb ingredients – Vegetables like spinach, kale, zucchini, cauliflower, and broccoli are fantastic for a low-carb soup base! 
  • Healthy fats – use healthy fats in your keto soups to add richness.
  • Low-carb broths: Use broths made from bone, chicken, or beef broth as the base for your soup. These broths are generally low in carbs and can provide a rich flavor. You can also make homemade broth to avoid those with extra carbs.

How To Serve Keto Soups?

To make a keto soup even more filling and nutritious, you can pair it with a variety of side dishes or toppings. Here are my favorite ways to enjoy soups on a keto diet:

  • Keto Bread: I love making keto croutons out of my coconut flour bread and use them as a topping for my soups.
  • Crackers: Crackers are a great option to add a little crunch to the soup so that you can make cheddar crackers or seed crackers.
  • Avocado: a great way to add healthy fats and creaminess.
  • Cheese: Top the soup with grated cheddar, mozzarella, or Parmesan.
  • Salad: Choose a healthy salad as a side dish for soup.
  • Nuts and Seeds: Try adding almonds, walnuts, or pumpkin seeds to your soup.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Making Keto Soups

  • Using high-carb vegetables. Some vegetables are higher in carbs than others, and it’s best to choose low-carb vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, and spinach.
  • Using high-carb thickeners. Often soups are made with thickeners such as flour or cornstarch that are high in carbs and should be avoided on a keto diet. Instead, use low-carb thickeners like xanthan gum, guar gum, or psyllium husk powder.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb mild ground beef
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 2 cups baby spinach chopped
  • 4 cups cauliflower cut into florets
  • 6 slices bacon chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 4 cups vegetable broth or chicken broth
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • Brown sausage, and bacon over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, and saute for a few minutes.
  • Add in the cauliflower, broth, and simmer for 15 minutes or until the cauliflower is fork tender.
  • Remove from the heat and add in the heavy cream. Mix the baby spinach.
  • Serve the best keto soup hot!
