What Is Hibachi Chicken?

Hibachi chicken is a mouthwatering Japanese dish that has become super popular recently. The dish is prepared by marinating chicken breast or thigh meat in a delicious savory sauce, then grilling it alongside fresh vegetables such as onions, zucchini, and mushrooms on a hot teppanyaki-style grill.

This cooking method imparts a unique smoky flavor to the chicken and vegetables, resulting in a mouthwatering taste that’s hard to resist.

Once the chicken and vegetables are cooked to perfection, they are served hot with a side of steaming rice and a variety of dipping sauces. Many Japanese restaurants offer hibachi chicken as part of a larger teppanyaki-style meal, where chefs prepare the food right in front of the diners, entertaining them with skillful cooking techniques and playful banter.

Hibachi chicken is a delectable option for those looking to indulge in a satisfying and healthy meal packed with mouthwatering flavor. Its tender and succulent texture combined with a savory taste is sure to delight any taste bud, making it a hit dish both when cooking at home and dining out at a Japanese restaurant.

Difference Between Hibachi And Teriyaki Chicken

We can see that hibachi and teriyaki chicken are quite similar. However, the sauce is what makes them different. Hibachi chicken is served with a soy sauce-based sauce and mustard sauce, and teriyaki sauce is a sweet glaze with soy sauce.

Hibachi chicken is cooked on a grill alongside vegetables and has a smoky flavor, while teriyaki chicken is pan-fried or grilled and basted with a sweet and savory sauce. Both dishes are delicious and popular in Japanese cuisine.

ingredients for hibachi chicken

Fried Rice

  • Avocado Oil – You can replace it with the same amount of butter or sesame oil.
  • Onion – either white or yellow. Both types are fine for this recipe.
  • Vegetables – I used frozen peas and carrots in this recipe, but fresh ones are also great.
  • Eggs – depending on your preferences, you can add extra eggs or not. I used only one.
  • Rice – I used zero carb shirataki rice made from konjac flour for this recipe. But, you can use any cooked rice or cauliflower rice.
  • Butter – If you don’t want to consume too much sodium, use unsalted butter or dairy-free butter.
  • Soy Sauce- If you want to make a gluten-free sauce, you can use Tamari or Coconut Aminos instead of soy sauce.

Hibachi Chicken

  • Sesame Oil – here is used for cooking the chicken. You can replace it with avocado or coconut oil.
  • Chicken Breast – this recipe is usually made with chicken breast, but you can also use chicken thighs. Make sure that you cut it into approximately equal pieces to cook evenly.
  • Soy Sauce – no hibachi chicken without soy sauce.
  • Garlic – garlic is highly flavorful and wonderful, so feel free to add more if you enjoy its flavor!
  • Lemon Juice – you can skip this ingredient, but it will taste better if you use it. It will give the dish a sweet and sour aroma and help the meat soften.
  • Salt&Pepper – to taste, but pay attention to the salt amount that you are using since this dish requires using soy sauce.

Hibachi Vegetables

  • Sesame & Avocado Oil – sesame oil is especially used in any Asian recipe, and in combination with avocado oil, it tastes extremely delicious.
  • Zucchini – make sure you cut them into equal and small pieces to cook evenly and on time.
  • Onion – I love using yellow onion because it’s slightly sweet and has a mild flavor.
  • Mushrooms – use your favorite type of mushrooms such as shiitake mushrooms, white button mushrooms, cremini mushrooms, or portobello mushrooms.
  • Soy Sauce – Soy sauce adds the proper saltiness, and reduced-sodium soy sauce is available.

Tips for Making The Best Hibachi Chicken

  • Marinate the chicken: Marinating the chicken in a mixture of soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, garlic powder, and ginger helps to infuse it with flavor and make it tender.
  • Heat the skillet or wok: Ensure that your skillet or wok is heated up properly before cooking the chicken. This will help to sear the meat and give it a nice crispy texture.
  • Cook the chicken in batches: Avoid crowding the skillet or wok when cooking the chicken, as this will result in steaming instead of searing. Cook the chicken in batches to ensure even cooking and a nice sear.
  • Let the rice cool: Use leftover rice or cook the rice ahead of time and let it cool in the refrigerator. This will help prevent the rice from getting mushy when stir-frying.

Variations

There are many variations you can try for Hibachi Chicken with Fried Rice and Vegetables to suit your taste preferences. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Seafood: Swap out the chicken for shrimp, scallops, or a combination of seafood. You can also add in some crab meat or lobster for a luxurious touch.
  • Tofu or Tempeh: For a vegetarian or vegan version, replace the chicken with tofu or tempeh. They will absorb the flavors of the marinade and spices just as well as chicken, and provide a similar protein content.
  • Different Vegetables: You can mix and match different vegetables in your Hibachi dish, such as zucchini, broccoli, snow peas, bell peppers, onions, and carrots. Try to use a variety of colors for a visually appealing and nutrient-rich meal.
  • Spicier: If you like things spicy, add in some chili flakes or hot sauce to the marinade or stir-fry sauce. You can also include some sliced jalapenos or Thai chilies for extra heat.
