Let’s take a look at the ingredients and see what you’ll need to make the best keto tuna cakes

  • Canned Tuna in Water – Look for cans of tuna that come in chunks and it’s meaty. Place the tuna in a colander while you prep the other ingredients.
  • Garlic Cloves – If you don’t have fresh garlic, you can use garlic powder.
  • White Onion –  you need to chop it well. If you have a different kind of onion on hand, feel free to use it.
  • Lemon Juice –  Fresh squeezed or bottled without sugar added.
  • Egg – The egg acts as a binder. In place of eggs, you can use flaxseed eggs.
  • Almond Flour –  We used almond flour as a low-carb alternative, but you can also use a little coconut flour.
  • Mayonnaise– I chose avocado oil mayo since it’s our favorite and makes the tuna burgers super moist and creamy.
  • Parmesan Cheese –  If you don’t have parmesan cheese, you can also use mozzarella.
  • Parsley – the parsley will give the tuna patties a unique flavor. I recommend fresh, but if you don’t have any fresh, use dried parsley.
  • Oil – I used Avocado oil, but you may use any other oil suitable for frying.

How To Make Keto Tuna Cakes

If you follow just a few simple steps, you will enjoy the most flavorful tuna cakes ever:

Start by making the tuna cakes. Drain the liquid from the tuna cans, then mix it well with the rest of the ingredients.

Mix the almond flour and grated parmesan cheese with a fork until well incorporated. keto tuna cakes make the batter

Take ¼ cup of the tuna mixture and form it into a patty.

Cook the patties for about 5 minutes per side or until they are golden brown and cooked well. The cooking time depends on how thick your patties are.

Tips For Making The Best Low Carb Tuna Cakes

  1. If the tuna cakes start to fall apart when forming, you can add 1-2 tbsp of almond flour to the mixture. Your tuna is probably watery and needs a little more flour.
  2.  Make sure to use a nonstick pan.
  3. Allow tuna cakes to cook on one side long enough that, when flipping, the cakes do not fall apart.
  4. If you prefer spicy tuna cakes, add 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper or 1 tsp hot sauce to the mixture.
  5. Cook the patties in butter for an extra crispy and buttery crust.

Lemon Dill Aioli

This lemon dill aioli sauce with lemon is the perfect addition to these nutrient-dense tuna cakes.

For the sauce, you’ll need a small bowl and a few ingredients. Whisk everything together until smooth and creamy.

Refrigerate until ready serve, preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to develop.

Enjoy tuna cakes with a dollop of healthy citrusy aioli.

Is Tuna Keto-Friendly?

When it comes to the question if Tuna is keto-approved or not, the short answer is yes.

You need to know that Tuna can be a healthy protein snack or meal for people following a keto diet. This fish is a nutritious and excellent source of protein, selenium, and vitamin D.

Tuna, like other fish, is incredibly low in carbs and doesn’t contain sugar or fiber, making it the perfect keto-friendly food.

Can I Bake Tuna Cakes?

Sure! If you are not a fan of frying, you can easily bake these tuna cakes.

All you have to do is place the patties on a baking sheet in the fridge for about 10 minutes until they firm up.

Then bake at 350 F for about 20 minutes until crispy and golden on the outside.

They cook perfectly, and the best part is that they need very little oil.

You can save the leftovers for lunch in a sandwich or on a bed of lettuce for a salad. They’re even better as a high-protein snack throughout the day!

I love making tuna cakes from scratch because it’s super easy. If you have any leftovers, you can store them in the fridge for up to 6 days or frozen for up to three months.

I recommend making a double batch and store cooked tuna patties in the freezer.
