This keto cranberry sauce is sweet, a little tart, and full of fresh cranberry flavor, with a hint of orange zest. It’s made with just 4 ingredients and comes together in about 15–20 minutes on the stovetop. This easy low-carb cranberry sauce is perfect for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or serving alongside roasted turkey, and you can make it several days ahead.

Every fall, I look forward to making homemade cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving. As soon as fresh cranberries start showing up in stores, I grab a few extra bags and freeze them so I can make this sauce whenever I want.

And while I love a classic Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, gravy, and creamy mashed cauliflower, I think a spoonful of cranberry sauce makes everything even better. That sweet-tart flavor is just what you need alongside all those savory dishes.

I also love that this recipe is so simple. You add everything to a saucepan, let the cranberries cook until they burst, and that’s pretty much it. The sauce thickens naturally as it cools, so there’s no need for cornstarch or other thickeners.

Why You’ll Love This Keto Cranberry Sauce

  • Quick and easy. You only need a saucepan and about 15–20 minutes to prepare it.
  • Perfect for making ahead. Prepare it a few days before Thanksgiving and keep it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve.
  • So much better homemade. You can adjust the sweetness and texture exactly how you like them.
  • Delicious warm or cold. Serve it warm with freshly roasted turkey or chilled straight from the fridge.
  • Great for leftovers. Spread a little on a turkey sandwich or serve it alongside leftover chicken.
  • Easy to make a bigger batch. Double the recipe if you’re hosting a larger holiday gathering or want extra for later.

Is Cranberry Sauce Keto-Friendly?

Traditional cranberry sauce is usually made with cranberries, sugar, and water. While cranberries are naturally tart and relatively low in carbohydrates compared with many other fruits, the added sugar in traditional recipes increases the carbohydrate content.

This homemade keto cranberry sauce uses a powdered low-carb sweetener instead of regular sugar. You still get that familiar sweet-tart cranberry flavor, but without adding white sugar to the recipe.

It’s also naturally gluten-free and dairy-free, making it an easy addition to your Thanksgiving menu.

Ingredients for Keto Cranberry Sauce

One of my favorite things about this recipe is that it only needs four simple ingredients. You probably already have most of them at home.

  • Cranberries: Fresh or frozen cranberries both work beautifully. I love using fresh cranberries during the holidays, but frozen ones are just as convenient and don’t need to be thawed first.
  • Powdered Sweetener: I recommend powdered allulose or a powdered monk fruit blend suitable for one-to-one sugar replacement. Check the package for sweetness equivalence, since different products can vary. Allulose is especially useful for a smooth sauce because it doesn’t crystallize as easily when chilled.
  • Water: Helps the cranberries soften and cook evenly. The sauce will naturally thicken as the berries break down.
  • Orange Zest: Adds a fresh citrus flavor that balances the tart cranberries. Be sure to grate only the orange-colored part of the peel, avoiding the bitter white pith.

How to Make Keto Cranberry Sauce

Making homemade low-carb cranberry sauce couldn’t be easier. Everything cooks together in one saucepan, and there’s very little preparation involved.

1. Combine the Ingredients

Add the cranberries, powdered sweetener, water, and freshly grated orange zest to a medium saucepan. Give everything a good stir to combine.

If you’re using frozen cranberries, there’s no need to thaw them first.

2. Bring to a Boil

Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil.

Once it starts bubbling, reduce the heat to low so the cranberries can simmer gently.

3. Simmer Until Thickened

Let the cranberry mixture simmer for about 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally. As the cranberries cook, they’ll begin to soften and burst, releasing their juices and naturally thickening the sauce.

You can gently press some of the cranberries against the side of the saucepan with a spoon if you prefer a smoother texture.

4. Adjust the Consistency

Once most of the cranberries have burst and the sauce has thickened slightly, remove the saucepan from the heat.

The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools, so don’t worry if it looks a little thinner than you expected.

If it becomes too thick, stir in a tablespoon of water at a time until you reach your preferred consistency.

5. Serve or Refrigerate

Transfer the cranberry sauce to a serving bowl and enjoy it warm, or let it cool before refrigerating.

I usually make mine a day or two before Thanksgiving because it’s one less thing to prepare on the day itself.

Tips for Making the Best Keto Cranberry Sauce

  • Use fresh or frozen cranberries. Both work well, although frozen cranberries may take a little longer to heat through.
  • Adjust the sweetness to taste. Cranberries are naturally tart, and some people prefer a sweeter sauce than others. Start with the recipe amount, then adjust if needed.
  • Don’t cook it until it’s extremely thick. Cranberry sauce continues to firm up as it cools. Remove it from the heat while it’s still slightly loose.
  • Choose your sweetener carefully. Allulose works well for a smooth texture, while some other low-carb sweeteners may crystallize as the sauce cools.
  • Use fresh orange zest. It gives the sauce a lovely citrus flavor without adding orange juice.
  • Leave some cranberries whole. I like my cranberry sauce with a little texture, but you can mash more of the berries if you prefer it smoother.

Can You Make Keto Cranberry Sauce Ahead of Time?

Absolutely! This is one of my favorite Thanksgiving recipes to make ahead.

You can prepare the sauce 2–3 days before serving and keep it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

I actually prefer making it ahead because the flavors have more time to come together, and the sauce becomes thicker as it chills. Before serving, give it a good stir. If it’s thicker than you like, simply add a splash of water.

You can serve it cold or gently reheat it in a small saucepan over low heat.

How to Store Homemade Cranberry Sauce

In the Refrigerator

Allow the cranberry sauce to cool, then transfer it to an airtight container or glass jar.

Store it in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Use a clean spoon each time you serve it to help keep the sauce fresh.

Can You Freeze Keto Cranberry Sauce?

Yes! This cranberry sauce freezes well, making it a great recipe to prepare ahead of the holiday season.

Once cooled, transfer it to a freezer-safe container, leaving a little room at the top for expansion.

Freeze for up to 3 months.

When you’re ready to use it, thaw it overnight in the refrigerator and stir well before serving.

What to Serve with Keto Cranberry Sauce

Of course, cranberry sauce is a Thanksgiving classic, but there are plenty of ways to enjoy it beyond the holiday meal.

Here are some of my favorite serving ideas:

  • Roasted Turkey: The sweet-tart sauce pairs beautifully with juicy turkey breast and crispy roasted skin.
  • Mashed Cauliflower: Add a spoonful alongside creamy mashed cauliflower and gravy for a classic holiday combination.
  • Roasted Chicken: Cranberry sauce is just as delicious with chicken, especially when it’s seasoned with herbs.
  • Turkey Sandwiches: Spread a little sauce on low-carb bread and add leftover turkey for an easy lunch.
  • Holiday Leftovers: Serve it with leftover roasted vegetables, turkey, or other savory dishes.

How Many Carbs Are in Keto Cranberry Sauce?

Cranberries contain natural carbohydrates, but they also contain fiber and have a naturally tart flavor.

This homemade low-carb cranberry sauce uses a sugar replacement instead of regular granulated sugar, so it’s a lower-carb alternative to many traditional sweetened cranberry sauces.

The finished recipe makes 12 servings, with approximately 2g net carbs per serving, depending on the sweetener used and the size of your portions.

For consistent portions, divide the finished sauce into 12 equal servings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is My Cranberry Sauce Too Thin?

Cranberry sauce naturally thickens as it cools because cranberries contain pectin. If the sauce looks thin while it’s still hot, allow it to cool before deciding whether it needs more cooking time.

If it’s still too thin after cooling, return it to the saucepan and simmer gently for a few more minutes, stirring occasionally.

What If My Cranberry Sauce Is Too Thick?

If the sauce becomes too thick after cooling or refrigerating, stir in a tablespoon of water at a time until it reaches your preferred consistency.

You can also warm it gently in a saucepan to make it easier to stir.

Can I Make Cranberry Sauce Without Orange Zest?

Yes, you can leave out the orange zest if you prefer a more traditional cranberry flavor. The sauce will still taste delicious, although you’ll miss that little hint of citrus.

If you want a different flavor, you can try adding a small pinch of cinnamon instead.

Can I Use Maple Syrup or Honey Instead of a Low-Carb Sweetener?

Yes, maple syrup or honey can sweeten homemade cranberry sauce, but either one will increase the carbohydrate and sugar content.

If you use them, start with less than the listed amount of powdered sweetener, taste, and adjust as needed. They aren’t necessarily equally sweet or interchangeable by volume.

Can I Make This Cranberry Sauce Less Sweet?

Of course! If you prefer a more tart cranberry sauce, you can reduce the amount of sweetener.

Start with less, then taste the sauce toward the end of cooking and adjust until it’s just right for you.

    1. If you don’t mind the extra carbs, you can use maple syrup or honey for sweetness. Just note that it won’t be strictly keto, but it will be naturally delicious!
