Keto Rum Balls are a classic no-bake holiday treat. If you’re looking for an easy, boozy, super chocolatey, and dense low carb Christmas treat, these sugar-free chocolate rum balls are the best.
These diabetic rum balls take less than 20 minutes to whip up from start to finish, require no baking and no special cooking skills. I love making quick keto desserts, and I can say that these are even easier to make than my 90 seconds keto chocolate keto mug cake.
What are Rum Balls?
Christmas treat in Australia, where chocolate and coconut meet condensed milk and crushed wafers or cookies!
Traditional rum balls are a popular Christmas treat in Australia made with chocolate, coconut, crushed wafers or cookies, and condensed milk. Sounds amazing but way too high in carbs and sugar.
I’ll show you how to make the best keto rum balls that taste the same but without added sugars and way fewer carbs per serving.
Ingredients for Keto Rum Balls
- Cocoa Powder – the quality is super important here, and I low using Dutch-processed alkaline cocoa as it’s super strong and adds the best chocolate taste.
- Coconut Oil – not a fan of coconut oil? You can use unsalted butter or refined coconut oil that has no coconut taste.
- Almond Flour and Coconut Flour – my favorite combo when it comes to keto desserts. It provides the best texture reducing the grittiness.
- Dark Rum tastes best in this recipe and adds fantastic flavor. It gives the classic flavor to these yummy keto bites, so feel free to use more or less. You can also use bourbon or whisky.
- Shredded coconut – choose unsweetened shredded coconut.
- Sweetener – use your favorite powdered sweetener to mix well with the other ingredients.
How to Make Keto Rum Balls
The easiest way to make these delicious keto Christmas treats is to add all the ingredients to a food processor, and pulse a few times until you get a nice thick batter that holds together.
Make the Rum Balls
If you don’t have a food processor, add all the ingredients to a large bowl and use a wooden spoon to combine well all the ingredients.
Then, roll a tablespoon of mixture into a ball using your hands.
How Many Carbs are in Keto Rum Balls?
Remember that moderation is key, and you can enjoy a bit of everything during the holidays. This recipe yields 20 rum balls of 20g each. A single keto rum ball is just 1g net carbs and 94 calories. I think it’s a fantastic way to treat yourself without the sugar and carbs.
What to Roll Rum Balls In?
Wondering how you could roll your rum balls to make them even more festive:
- unsweetened cocoa powder
- powdered sweetener
- crushed nuts such as hazelnuts, pecans, or walnuts
- sugar-free sprinkles
- or you can leave them plain
- dip them in white or white chocolate.
How Long to Store Low Carb Rum balls?
You’ll have to trust me on this. These last for quite a while in the refrigerator and can definitely be made ahead. They taste incredible after a few days as the flavors have time to develop.
To store these sugar-free rum balls, place them in an airtight container, and refrigerate for a couple of weeks.
I recommend you let them at room temperature before serving!
Can I Make Alcohol-Free Keto Rum Balls?
If you’re looking for a kid-friendly alcohol-free version, feel free to replace the rum with a few drops of rum extract or pure vanilla extract.
