Is Fried Rice Keto Friendly?
Unfortunately, regular fried rice made with rice is not keto-friendly as it’s super high in carbs. This applies to both white and brown rice and any rice products that have been processed. One cup of cooked carbs has over 44g of net carbs, almost double the amount required to remain in ketosis.
Luckily, there’s shirataki rice available on the market. It’s the best substitute for rice and will definitely change your life. It’s important to prepare it correctly in order to fully enjoy it in recipes.
What Is Shirataki Rice?
Shirataki Rice is a zero-carb rice substitute made from konjac. Konjac Rice is also low in calories, fat-free, gluten-free, and an important fiber source.
Miracle rice, konjac rice, or shirataki rice are all the same products under different names. Basically, it’s made of 3% fiber and 97% water.
This low carb rice is primarily used in Japanese cuisine but has gained popularity over the years as it’s perfect for enjoying on a keto or low-calorie diet.
Does Shirataki Rice Taste Like Rice?
Shirataki rice has a slightly different texture than regular rice. It’s flavorless with a chewy texture. When you prepare it the right way, it tastes delicious as it absorbs all the flavor.
How to Prepare Miracle Rice
Before using the konjac rice in this recipe, make sure to drain and rinse it. When you remove the konjac rice from the package, it will have a fishy odor.
This is absolutely normal and comes from the root of the konjac plant. The scent will go away when you drain, rinse the rice a few times, and boil for 3-4 minutes. Make sure to read the instructions on the package.
Once you boil the rice, drain, and it’s ready to be used in any of your favorite recipes.
Ingredients For Keto Fried Rice
If you eat at a Chinese restaurant and like fried rice with vegetables and eggs, you can easily prepare it at home! And the advantage is that by preparing it yourself, you know exactly what it contains, and you can add your favorite seasonings.
Here is everything you need to make it:
- Konjac Rice – Since we are keto lovers, we all know that regular rice is not an option. So, you can use prepared konjac rice instead. Just remember to drain it super well and boil for a few minutes to get rid of the bad smell.
- Butter- you can use any other vegetable oil you want.
- White Onion
- Frozen Vegetables – feel free to use your favorite veggies- mainly peas and carrots, but you can use broccoli, cauliflower, or asparagus.
- Eggs – add flavor, texture, and protein.
- Butter – the butter will add a special taste and creaminess to the keto fried rice.
- Soy Sauce – this ingredient is a must for this recipe. Use low sodium soy sauce or coconut aminos for gluten-free fried rice.
- Sesame oil – is optional but adds an incredible nutty flavor.
How To Make Keto Fried Rice
You will be surprised to see how easy it is to make this delicious keto-fried rice. Here is all you need to do:
- Start by preparing the shirataki rice as written on the package. Drain the rice well and rinse for 1-2 minutes under tap water. Boil the rice for 3 minutes and drain it again.
- Peel the onion, finely chop it and fry it together in butter for about 4-5 minutes. Then put the vegetables aside in the pan, break two eggs and mix quickly until fully scrambled.
- Then add the well-drained rice and the butter and mix well.
- Add the soy sauce and fry for another 3 minutes. If necessary, add a little more salt, but be careful because the soy sauce is salty.
Tips For Making The Best Keto Fried Rice
- Scramble the eggs in the same pan, and don’t skip the sesame oil.
- Make sure that you frequently stir to avoid sticking to the pan or burning it.
- Use a large frying pan to ensure that all of your vegetables and rice fit without spilling out.
Recipe Variations
- Feel free to add your favorite veggies like mushrooms, red bell pepper, or broccoli.
- You can add some chopped ham or bacon.
- Use cauliflower rice in place of rice.
- For some extra heat, mix in some Sriracha.
Serving Ideas
I like to eat this keto fried rice simple as it is because it’s extremely delicious, but you can also pair it with other dishes like:
How Can I Store This Keto Fries Rice?
- Fridge: You can store the leftovers refrigerated in airtight containers. If properly refrigerated, it can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.
- Freezer: No, freezing shirataki rice is not possible as it changes the texture.
- Reheating: You can reheat the leftovers on the stovetop or in the microwave when you want to eat them. However, for optimum results, avoid reheating fried rice more than once.
What Can I Use Instead Or Shirataji Rice?
- Palmini Rice is another great low carb alternative with only 4g net carbs per serving.
- Cauliflower Rice– you can also make cauliflower fried rice by using riced cauliflower instead of white rice.
Is Soy Sauce Keto-Friendly?
Soy sauce is a brown, salty liquid used as a condiment or seasoned in many Asian cuisines. Soy sauce is prepared from fermented soy, salt, water, and toasted grains in some cases. Soy sauce has an earthy and umami flavor, making it versatile.
You might include soy sauce in your keto diet because it only has 1 gram of net carbohydrates per tablespoon. If gluten and other soy by-products don’t affect you, you can incorporate soy sauce into your keto diet without any problems.

Thank you for reminding me that I can use the shirataki rice for this dish! I have been hungry for fried rice. Win-Win. On a side note I learned some time back that you don’t really have to boil the rice ahead of time. After rinsing and prepping the rice I put it in a non-stick hot frying pan and stir until they get nice and squeaky (rubber sound) and then use as directed. So Tasty!!! Thanks again.
