What is a Keto Mug Cake?

A mug cake is exactly what it sounds like—a quick, single-serving cake made in a mug! A keto mug cake uses low-carb ingredients and is usually cooked in the microwave in just 2-3 minutes.

The best part? No piles of dirty dishes to clean up! Chances are, you already have all the ingredients in your pantry, making it the perfect dessert for those last-minute chocolate cravings. This keto chocolate mug cake is calling your name!

I make this recipe almost every day—it’s that good. Sometimes I skip the sweetener because I enjoy the rich, slightly bitter taste of the chocolate. And thanks to the coconut flour, the texture is just right—no wet, eggy cake here!

Ingredients for the Keto Mug Cake

low carb mug cake with chocolate and coconut flour
  • Coconut Flour – A keto baking staple! It absorbs liquids well, giving the mug cake a fluffy texture.
  • Egg – Adds structure and keeps the cake moist.
  • Your Favorite Sweetener – I recommend monk fruit or erythritol for a keto-friendly option. If you’re making a paleo mug cake, swap it for coconut sugar.
  • Cocoa Powder – The secret to that rich, chocolatey flavor! Use unsweetened cocoa powder for the best results.
  • Grass-Fed Butter – Adds moisture and a touch of richness to the cake.
  • Whipping Cream or Coconut Cream – For added creaminess and a boost of flavor.
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk or Water – To adjust the consistency of the batter without adding carbs.

How to Make Keto Mug Cake?

The beauty of a mug cake is its simplicity—mix, microwave, and dig in! Here’s how to make your keto mug cake step-by-step. For precise measurements, scroll down to the recipe card for all the details (and a printable version).

  1. Mix the Dry Ingredients – Start by combining the coconut flour and cocoa powder in a small bowl. This ensures everything is evenly distributed for a smooth batter.
  2. Sweeten to Taste – Add your favorite sweetener, adjusting the amount to suit your taste. Some like it sweeter, some don’t—your mug cake, your rules!
  3. Combine the Wet Ingredients – In another bowl, whisk together the melted butterbeaten eggwhipping cream, and unsweetened almond milk. Make sure you’re using unsweetened almond milk to keep it keto-friendly.
  4. Bring It All Together – Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix until smooth. If the batter feels too thick, add a splash more almond milk or water until it resembles a brownie batter consistency.
  5. Prep Your Mug – Grease your favorite microwave-safe mug with a little butter or coconut oil, then pour in the batter.
  6. Microwave to Perfection – Place the mug in your microwave and cook for 2-4 minutes. The time will vary depending on your microwave’s power. Check for doneness by inserting a skewer—it should come out clean. For me, 3 minutes is just right!

You can totally dig in straight from the mug, but I like to get a little fancy. I flip mine onto a plate, add some dark chocolate, a sprinkle of cinnamon, or a dollop of peanut butter. Feeling extra? Drizzle a bit of coconut oil over the top—it’s pure magic.

The texture? It’s like biting into a proper chocolate brownie—moist, rich, and ridiculously satisfying. Trust me, you’ll feel like you’re eating the real deal.

Now, imagine this: your warm mug cake topped with a swirl of fresh whipped cream or a scoop of keto vanilla ice cream, paired with a hot keto coffee. Absolute heaven, right? So, go ahead, make it now and treat yourself!

Omg Heaven! I’ve been looking for a good mug cake recipe and finally! This one is it I did add some natural peanut butter on top of it when it came out of the micro and added a little whipped cream. It was insanely Delish. Thanks for sharing, this is a keeper!!

  3. First attempt; recipe as listed. 2½ minutes in microwave. tasted ok, but really dry. Will try again tomorrow. a little more liquid at 2 minutes.

    1. Thank you for sharing your experience with making the Keto Chocolate Mug Cake! It’s not uncommon for microwave times to vary depending on the wattage of the microwave oven, so adjusting the cooking time and adding a little more liquid is a good approach. Experimenting with the recipe to achieve the desired moistness is a great idea, and I hope your second attempt turns out even better.
