What Are Fritters?

Fritters are a type of fried food made by coating small pieces of ingredients, such as vegetables, fruits, or meat, in a batter or dough and then frying them until they are crispy and golden brown. The batter or dough typically includes ingredients like flour, eggs, milk, water, and seasonings such as salt, pepper, herbs, or spices. Fritters can be savory or sweet, depending on the ingredients used, and they are often served as appetizers, snacks, or even as part of a main meal. Examples of popular fritters include zucchini fritters, corn fritters, apple fritters, and shrimp fritters.

Spinach Fritters Ingredients

For these easy gluten-free spinach fritters, you will need a few simple ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen. Here is a list of everything you will need:

  • Spinach: If you’re using frozen spinach, make sure to thaw it completely and squeeze out all the water to get rid of extra moisture. This is super important so your fritters aren’t soggy. You can use fresh spinach too, but cook it first until it’s wilted down, then cool and squeeze out the water.
  • Onion: Chop up one medium onion really fine. It adds great flavor.
  • Garlic: Fresh garlic is awesome for a punchy taste. If you don’t have it, you can use garlic powder instead. Just sprinkle it in until it tastes good to you.
  • Eggs: You’ll need these to stick everything together. Make sure they’re large eggs.
  • Salt & Pepper: Add these according to what tastes good to you. They make all the other flavors pop.
  • Parmesan & Mozzarella Cheese: Shred your favorite cheeses and mix them in. These cheeses make the fritters extra tasty.
  • Almond Flour and Coconut Flour: These are used to help bind everything together and make the mix thicker. But if you prefer or need a substitute, you can use breadcrumbs instead. They work just as well for getting that perfect fritter consistency.

How To Make Crispy Spinach Fritters

You will be surprised to see how easy it is to prepare this delicious crispy spinach fritters recipe. Here is everything you have to do:

Thaw and Drain Spinach

Follow the instructions on the package to thaw the frozen chopped spinach. Once thawed, ensure it’s fully drained of excess moisture. You can use a kitchen towel or paper towels to squeeze out any remaining water from the spinach.

Mix All The Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, add the drained spinach, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, eggs, kosher salt, black pepper, Parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese, almond flour, and coconut flour. Mix thoroughly until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.

Cook The Fritters

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until it’s hot but not smoking.

I use a medium cookie scooper to make this step easier. I scoop out the spinach mixture and shape it into a small patty or fritter shape.

Gently place the formed fritters into the hot oil, carefully not to overcrowd the skillet.

Cook the fritters on each side for 3-4 minutes until they turn golden brown and crispy. Use a spatula to flip them over halfway through cooking to ensure even browning.

Once the fritters are cooked through and crispy on both sides, remove them from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels. This helps absorb any excess oil.

Repeat the frying process with the remaining spinach mixture, adding more olive oil to the skillet as needed. Once all the fritters are cooked, serve them hot as a delicious snack or appetizer.

Tips For Making The Best Crispy Spinach Fritters

  • Make sure you drain the thawed spinach well to remove excess moisture, as this will prevent the fritters from becoming soggy.
  • Use a non-stick frying pan and ensure the oil is hot before adding the fritters to ensure they cook evenly and become crispy.
  • Avoid overcrowding the pan, as this can cause the fritters to steam rather than fry, resulting in a soggy texture.
  • Finely chop the onion and mince the garlic to help the ingredients bind together better in the mixture.
  • When shaping the fritters, try making them of uniform size and thickness to ensure even cooking. Use a measuring spoon or ice cream scoop to portion out the mixture for consistent results.

Recipe Variations

  • Add one tbsp of hot sauce or red pepper flakes to the spinach mixture for a spicy kick.
  • You can also incorporate finely chopped herbs such as parsley, dill, or cilantro for added freshness and flavor.
  • Substitute the almond flour with keto breadcrumbs if preferred.
  • Experiment with different types of cheese, such as cheddar, feta, or goat cheese, for unique flavor variations.
