What is Salisbury Steak?
Salisbury Steak is a popular meal that originates in the United States. It’s a cross between a meatloaf and a burger patty made with seasoned ground beef. The beef patties are seared in a skillet then simmered in a creamy mushroom gravy. There are so many delicious variations of this recipe named after a doctor who studied nutrition in the 19th century. He encouraged eating minced beef as a healthy food.

Ingredients For Keto Low Carb Salisbury Steak
For this delicious Salisbury Steak, you need just a few simple ingredients that are very accessible and inexpensive:
- Ground Beef – we recommend using lean ground beef because it has great flavor and it’s not that greasy. 90% is the best choice because!
- Onion – Use either white or yellow onions.
- Almond Flour – I recommend using fine blanched almond flour for a great texture in your low carb Salisbury steak instead of breadcrumbs.
- Garlic – We use fresh garlic in almost any savory dish that we’ve ever made. Even if fresh is always the best, you could use garlic powder if you don’t have any fresh in your kitchen.
- Egg – This helps to bind the patties and adds moisture.
- Ketchup – Use your favorite brand of gluten-free and sugar-free ketchup.
- Worcestershire sauce – This is a concentrated sauce, and it’s best to be used during cooking. It boosts the flavors.
- Dijon Mustard – Look for one with no added sugar.
- Olive oil – you can use any type of oil you have on hand.
- Mushrooms – I used white button mushrooms, but any other variety is a fantastic choice.
- Unsalted Butter – the butter will give the sauce a special creaminess.
- Beef Broth – If you use a low-sodium beef broth, you may need to season with extra salt to taste.
How To Make This Salisbury Steak
It’s so easy to make this Keto Salisbury Steak by following just a few simple steps.
- Start by making the Salisbury steaks – In a large bowl, add the ground beef, almond flour, chopped onion, egg, parmesan cheese, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Basically, just combine all the ingredients until well incorporated.
- Form into six-round “steaks” that look like burger patties.
- Heat the oil in a large skillet and cook the hamburger steaks for 2-3 minute on each side until golden brown. The patties don’t have to be completely done since they continue cooking in the sauce.
- Make the Keto Mushroom Gravy – Remove the steaks from the pan, and if the pan looks too dry, add more oil.
- Cook the onion and garlic for a couple of minutes, then add the mushrooms.
- Add the butter, and once the butter is melted, pour the beef broth and the rest of the gravy ingredients.
- Return the steaks into the gravy and cook for another 4-5 minutes until the sauce starts to thicken.
- Serve hot with a side of creamy cauliflower mash and garnish with plenty of fresh parsley. Enjoy!
Tips For Making The Best Salisbury Steak
- After adding the beef broth to your sauce, it may not be thick enough, so a great option is to add some Xanthan Gum. It will help the sauce to thicken. Start with about 1/4 teaspoon and increase to about 1/2 teaspoon until the sauce reaches desired thickness.
- You can use any kind of mushrooms you like – just be sure to slice them into similar size pieces so they cook evenly.
- Be sure that the meat is not over-mixed. You have to combine all the ingredients but not too much because the steaks may become tough.
Recipe Variations
- Use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef. Usually, this is a beef recipe, but use poultry if you prefer.
- Make meatballs! – Use this recipe to make meatballs and then cook or freeze them.
How To Store This Salisbury Steak
- If you end up with some uncooked patties, you can freeze them and store them for a busy day when you don’t have so much time for cooking.
- The cooked patties can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to four days. Or, if you want, you can freeze them and defrost them in the refrigerator overnight.
